The above to do list could go on and on, and then go on some more. And, yes, even some days I have a to do list for my elusive to do list! Lately, my to do list has not only defined my day, but who I am also. I look at these lists and think, what can I complete and cross off my list? Then when I go to bed, yep, my mind contemplates that elusive list or lists and, I think, “What didn’t I cross off my list today?”
I tend to tell myself, that once I get everything crossed off my to do list, then I will relax and little. In all reality, the list never gets shorter. The other night, as I was cleaning the supper table, Zephyr asked, “Mom, can we play one game of soccer to 10?” Only 10 points, Mom.” Immediately I said, “sure after I clean the dishes first and sweep the floor.”
As, I continued loading the dishwasher, I thought to myself; stop doing the dishes and go play. And that is just what I did. That half hour of playing soccer was the most relaxing part of my day. Not only did we play a game of soccer, but Zephyr and I also read a book and neither of these were on my to do list. What was on the to do list, cleaning the kitchen, I was able to complete while the kids were fast asleep.
Those things that are not on my to do list, playing with my kids, spending time in His word, exercising, relaxing in my favorite chair, sitting on the deck talking to my husband, blogging/reading, yes those are the things that bring joy to my days. These are the things that I never put on my to do list, and these should most definitely be at the top of my to do list!
Yeah, my to do list, it may be impossible to completely clear off in any given day…or week for that matter. Having an overwhelmed to do list, robs my day of joy. I need to be all right with extending myself some grace, and not letting my to do list define who I am. When I focus on my to do lists, I become overwhelmed...it defines me.
I do not what to be defined by the to do list(s), and when this happens there is only one place to turn. I take a deep breath and turn to Him. I pray, Psalm 142:3, “When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn.”
