Yes, I am that 36 year old who finds herself watching Disney Channel’s Girl Meets World, without any children around. What I find intriguing about each episode is the life lesson to be learned throughout the episode. During one episode, last week, the students asked their teacher, “What is the secret to life?”
The episode confirmed what I all ready knew; the secret to life is relationships. I have heard countless number of times, “the quality of our life is dependent upon the relationships we build with those around us.” Healthy relationships provide opportunities to share laughter to giving people a sense of belonging to even having that one person who “always has your back.” The episode focused on developing those relationships with our friends, yet it made me think that the secret to life is the relationship we develop with God.
The secret to life is confirmed in Matthew 22:37-38, Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”
Our story starts with building a relationship with God first, then strengthening relationships with those around us. All relationships begin by spending time with each other and this is what God wants. He wants us to spend time with Him. It doesn’t matter the season of our life, whether we are going through a wilderness period or not, God wants us to grow in an intimate, personal relationship with Him. The quality of our relationship with God is dependent upon the time we spend with Him. To do this we must pray, read and meditate on His word. And through this time we cultivate our fertile soil, deepen our faith and learn to trust Him. I know for me, spending time with God, mellows me out. I learn to love Him with my heart, soul, and mind. It changes my heart.
As we are building our relationship with our Heavenly Father, I can see, the secret to life transforming through the relationships around me. Matthew 22:39 goes on, “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Taking the time to listen, encourage, and show empathy to others, helps me build relationships with those around me.
Yes, just as the teacher in the episode stated, the secret to life is relationships. However, I realize, cultivating my relationship with God first and foremost by spending time with Him, will ultimately be transpired to the relationships I build with others.
